【释义】：

ad．①(接在助动词、情态动词或动词be后面，简作n’t)不：I am not going．我不去．I do not know．我不知道． I can’t do it．我千不了．He is not a doctor．他不是医生．②(下接非限定动词)：Not knowing how to run the machine，we asked a worker for direction．因为不知道怎样开机器，我们请求工人指教．We warned them not to go skating on thin ice．我们警告他们别在薄冰上滑冰．③(与all，every等词连用，表示部分否定)并非：Not all men are here．并不是所有的人都在这里．Not everybody in our school can swim．在我们学校不是人人都会游泳的．All is not gold that glitters．【谚】发亮的东西并不一定都是金子．④(接在hope，suppose，believe等动词及perhaps，probably，absolutely，afraid，if not 等词之后，代替否定的从句)并非如此，不这样：Is he ill?——I think not(=I think that he is not ill)．他病了吗?——我想他没有病．Can you come next week?——I am afraid not(=I am afraid that I cannot come)．下星期你能来吗?——恐怕来不了(比较：I am not afraid．我不怕)．Will it rain this afternoon?——I hope not(=I hope that it will not rain)．午后能下雨吗?——希望不至于(比较：I do not hope that it will rain．我不希望下雨)．Is he coming，too?——Perhaps not．他也来吗?——也许不来．If he asks，I shall give it，if not，not．如果他要，我就给他；如果不要，那就算了．⑤(用于谨慎的叙述)不，并非：not a few不少．not seldom经常．not without reason并不是没有理由的．
