And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass. and went with the princes of Moab.
And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
And the Lord opened mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
And Balaam said unto the ass. Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
And the Ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.
Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
And the angel of the Lord said unto him. Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.
And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, 1 will get me back again.
And the angel of the Lord said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shall speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Anion, which is in the utmost coast.
And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore carnest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.
And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.

巴兰早晨起来，备上驴，和摩押的使臣一同去了。
神因他去就发了怒，耶和华的使者站在路上敌挡他。他骑着驴，有两个仆人跟随他。
驴看见耶和华的使者站在路上，手里有拔出来的刀，就从路上跨进田间，巴兰便打驴要叫它回转上路。
耶和华的使者就站在葡萄园的窄路上，这边有墙，那边也有墙。
驴看见耶和华的使者就贴靠墙，将巴兰的脚挤伤了，巴兰又打驴。
耶和华的使者又往前去，站在狭窄之处，左右都没有转折的地方。
驴看见耶和华的使者就卧在巴兰底下，巴兰发怒用杖打驴。
耶和华叫驴开口，对巴兰说：“我向你行了什么，你竟打我这三次呢?”
巴兰对驴说：“因为你戏弄我，我恨不能手中有刀，把你杀了。
”
驴对巴兰说：“我不是你从小时直到今日所骑的驴吗?我素常向你这样行过吗?”巴兰说：“没有。”
当时，耶和华使巴兰的眼目明亮，他就看见耶和华的使者站在路上，手里有拔出来的刀，巴兰便低头俯伏在地。
耶和华的使者对他说：“你为何这三次打你的驴呢?我出来敌挡你，因你所行的在我面前偏僻。
驴看见我就三次从我面前偏过去；驴若没有偏过去，我早把你杀了，留它存活。
”
巴兰对耶和华的使者说：“我有罪了，我不知道你站在路上阻挡我。你若不喜欢我去，我就转回。”
耶和华的使者对巴兰说：“你同这些人去吧!你只要说我对你说的话。”于是巴兰同着巴勒的使臣去了。
巴勒听见巴兰来了，就往摩押京城去迎接他。这城是在边界上，在亚嫩河旁。
巴勒对巴兰说：“我不是急急地打发人到你那里去召你吗?你为何不到我这里来呢?我岂不能使你得尊荣吗?”
巴兰说：“我已经到你这里来了，现在我岂能擅自说什么呢?神将什么话传给我，我就说什么。”
巴兰和巴勒同行，来到基列胡琐。
到了早晨，巴勒领巴兰到巴力的高处，巴兰从那里观看以色列营的边界。
